All most of us know how to do is get in our cars, adjust the seats, put gas in the tank, turn on the radio and drive our cars until they won't run any more. Our cars need a little tender loving care too. After all, if we take care of them, they will take care of us too.
The funny thing about car maintenance is that we don't know much about it. Establishing a few regular habits can make all the difference to you and to your car. If you aren't sure where to check the things listed below, please feel free to ask. Try these few suggestions:
When filling your car, gather any trash that needs to be thrown away. While the gas is pumping, take a visual inspection of your tires to see if any of them look low on air pressure. Another thing to do while you fill up is wash your windshield- and don't forget to wash your your lights too.
When we were young, there were full service stations that would check our oil and other fluid levels while we filled up. That doesn't happen much these days, but it is still very important to check regularly, and at the gas station is a good time to do it.
Have you ever read your car's instruction manual? Most of us have not. These little books make for interesting reading. They tell us when scheduled maintenance should be done. They can also save us a ton of money. If we don't follow the recommended scheduled maintenance, we could be responsible for even warranted repairs. You can also learn a lot about how your car works.
Trouble remembering when to change the oil in your car? Plan to do it every three months, when the seasons change: March, June, September and December. When you get the oil changed, also check the transmission and brake fluid levels. Have the belts checked to see if they are worn or loose. The coolant in the radiator and the windshield washer fluids should be checked at the time, as well. Windshield wipers should be replaced once per year; just before winter works best.

Proper tire pressure can help you get better gas mileage and keep your car from pulling to one side or another. Running on correct tire pressure helps your tires to wear evenly. Every 5,000 miles it is good to rotate your tires and balance them to prevent uneven wear. Your family's lives depend on having good tires on your car. Replace them when the tread is getting worn out.
